Pubs, Restaurants and Tea RoomsAlmost all of the pubs in the area serve food as well as drinks, varying from basic pub food at the bar to high end restaurant dining. Other interesting local pubs that can be found in Wilmcote (2 miles/3.5km) are The Masons Arms and the Mary Arden . Also nearby in the other direction is The Huff Cap in Great Alne. On the A3400 Stratford to Henley Road is the Bulls Head in Wootton Wawen (2.7 miles/4.5km). Also on the A3400 but heading south the Golden Cross at Bearley(2.5miles/4km) and The Armouries Arms (previously called the Dun Cow) at Pathlow (3.5miles / 5.5km) are both now reopened and serving good local pub food. The Armouries Arms has been refurbished in the style of an old fashioned traditional pub with good homecooked pub food at sensible prices. It is open daily from 11am to 11pm except Fri and Sat when they open until midnight. Traditional Sunday Carvery at 6.95 per head and curry and steak night on Fri and Sat respectively. Also there is a pub quiz every Monday and there will soon be a piano night on Tuesday nights.
Tea Rooms & Cafes
If you are just looking for a local tea room or cafe in the area that is open in the day, then the nearest ones are: Truly Scrumptious at the Little Alne Craft Centre (post code b95 6HW) at just 1.3 miles / 2km which is open 10am to 3pm; and the cafe at Yew Tree Farm Craft Centre (post code B95 6BY) at 3.2miles / 5.1 km which is open 10am to 5pm. Either of these can be accommodated into a nice walk from Aston Cantlow by following either the shorter Walk 3 along the River Alne to Little Alne, or the longer Walk 4 along the canal to Wooton Wawen. Heading south of Aston Cantlow, the Golden Cross in Ardens Grafton is worth a visit if only for the views towards the Cotswolds and Malvern Hills, although the food is excellent. Also in that direction are the Blue Boar in Temple Grafton, The Stag at Redhill, and several pubs in Alcester.
There is a plethora of choice in Stratford, including the famous Dirty Duck and Stratford’s oldest pub The Garrick. Another old Stratford pub The Windmill is shown here located in Church Street, near the Old Town.
The local Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale, Shakespeare CAMRA web site is a good place to visit to find out more about the local pubs around Aston Cantlow.
Aston Cantlow Club (click here for lots more information), the former Working Men’s Club in the village is open to visitors and offers a wide range of drinks and bar nibbles. On Saturdays, you can get fresh rolls and cobs. Opening hours are:

Island Meadow Caravan Park Shop (click here) situated in the Aston Cantlow on Mill Lane is the nearest shop if you run out of something. It provides a more limited range of similar items to Wilmcote Stores, and is open from March to October. Telephone 01789 488273.
Wootton Wawen. There is also a village shop and Post Office in Wootton Wawen (2.8 miles/4km) selling a wide selection of groceries and newspapers etc.
There are a selection of 16 craft units, speciality food stores and a cafe at Yew Tree Farm Craft Centre (2.9 miles.4km) just off the A3400 road in Wootton Wawen.

- Stratford upon Avon (10km/6miles) Tesco & Morrisons Both stores have fuel facilities and are served directly by bus from Aston Cantlow and have a delivery service and internet shopping.
Local growers and markets
Local grown food is often available from Mill Farm on Mill Lane – A board hanging outside will indicate what fruit, vegetables or plants they currently have for sale. If you want really fresh and local food in season then you can’t beat this. If the board is not out, just knock on their door to see what they have available.
Fresh eggs are also often available at Millside on Mill Lane opposite to the entrance to Rivermead House. Just check in the box by the gate.
Stratford upon Avon holds a Farmers Market in Rother Street opposite the Civic Hall on the first and third Saturdays of each month, which has a great selection of local and organic food stalls. The regular Stratford market on a Friday morning usually has a few regular fruit & veg stalls and a butchers stall that are worth a visit. Stratford also has the excellent “Barry the Butcher” on 6 Chapel Street for fresh local meat.
Unfortunately, the excellent Henley-in-Arden market has recently closed down, but the poultry and produce part of it at least is relocating to Wincot Lands, Clifford Chambers CV37 8LE just south of Stratford Upon Avon and will be running on Tuesdays from 10:00 , so should be worth a visit. There are several farm shops in the area but few very close. As you head towards Evesham, one of the best is Hillers Farm Shop (8.4 miles/13.5km) just off the old road from Alcester towards Evesham at Dunnington Crossroads near the Ragley Estate, postcode B49 5PD. As well as locally grown fruit and veg (all labelled with growers and locations) they have butchery from Ragley Meats which provides meat & game from the nearby Ragley Estate, and a fish counter. There is also a cafe, a small gift shop and even a regular real steam miniature railway.
Heading east rather than south, there is Freemans Farm Shop at the Snitterfield fruit farm on Kings Lane Snitterfield CV37 0QA. Tel 01789 730404.

Mobile fish & butchers vans come to the Aston Cantlow about once a month, during the day, and will usually sound their horn or knock on doors of regular customers to alert them to their presence. If you know of the schedule or contact details for any of these, please let us know.
